課程概述

This is an interdisciplinary course on the nature of perception and how it provides cognition about the world. Both philosophical views and empirical studies will be discussed. We will first consider what cognitive science and neural science tell us about how the perception system works. Then we will draw on these scientific resources to examine some philosophical issues, including the following: what does it mean to see an object? Do our conceptual capacities affect how we perceive the world? What is the best characterization of the content of perceptual experience? Can we perceive the world as it is, or only as it appears to us? By incorporating vision science into our discussions, we will learn how philosophers may make progress on these issues.

本課程分為下列幾個單元(846f)
1. Direct Realism & the Argument from Illusion
2. Vision Science & the Inverse Problem
3. Anti-individualism
4. The Two-Component View
5. Phenomenal Consciousness
6. Nonconceptual Content
7. Object Perception
8. The Interface Theory of Perception

課程目標
There are three goals in this course: first, we aim to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of perception and cognition. Second, students learn how to read philosophical texts carefully and write clearly. Third, students try to develop their own thoughts on some of the important issues.
課程要求
1. 學生除了得花功夫研讀困難的哲學作品,在上課時參與討論,評估各種立場的論證,也需要在作業中提出自己的觀點,並加以辯護。

2. Students are required to finish the weekly reading assignment before each class. You will spend significant time in reading and thinking. You are expected to make efforts to read the texts closely, write clearly, and think through the problems. Hopefully, your efforts will be intellectually rewarding.

3. Those who miss either 3 classes, 3 homework assignments, Mid-term Exam, or Final Exam will be failed.
